New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….
Original story (published on August 20, 2020) follows:
The Redmi Note 9S and the Redmi Note 9 Pro released a few months ago and both devices came with Android 10 alongside MIUI 11 pre-installed. It was but obvious that the two smartphones will receive the MIUI 12 update after Xiaomi first announced it in China.
Of course, neither of the two phones were on Xiaomi’s MIUI 12 update schedule for China since there aren’t any Chinese variants of the Redmi Note 9S and Redmi Note 9 Pro. That being said, Xiaomi tends to release system updates for its devices in China first.
This is also evident with the rollout of the MIUI 12 skin for eligible devices from its portfolio. Once the company is done pushing the update for devices in its home country, Global units and units sold in other regions begin to receive the update.
The company has already released the MIUI 12 update for devices such as the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Redmi Note 7 Pro. However, it is yet to push the stable MIUI 12 update for the Redmi Note 9S and the Redmi Note 9 Pro, both of which are newer models.
Thus it seems Xiaomi has been focused on developing its MIUI 12 skin for phones that have Chinese variants while the phones that do not have a China variant are left behind. Further, Xiaomi has not yet shared much information on the status of the update for the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9S.
Although, the company’s Indonesian website shared a schedule for the MIUI 12 rollout in which the Redmi Note 9 Pro is expected to get the update this month. Unfortunately, there’s still no information about the MIUI 12 update for the Redmi Note 9S.
Furthermore, a Mi Community moderator (1, 2) has also confirmed that Xiaomi’s latest skin isn’t available on either of the two devices yet. To add to the disappointment, the mod has not shared an ETA for the update.
In contrast, the Redmi Note 9 which is sold as the Redmi 10X 4G in China received the MIUI 12 update a while back. Thus, it seems Redmi Note 9 Pro and Note 9S users will have to continue waiting until further notice from Xiaomi.
In the meantime, keep an eye out on out MIUI 12 update tracker to be the first to know when the update arrives on your device. On the brighter side, the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Note 9S are eligible for the upcoming Android 11 update.
As usual, we will continue tracking the situation and will post an update once new information on the MIUI 12 update for either of the two devices surfaces.
